The largest military re-enactment in New England — more than 800 soldiers portraying British, Hessian, Irish, Welsh, Scots, French and Colonial troops. Mock battles, cannon demo’s, fife and drums and more.

The Village is transformed into a military camp focusing this year on the period of the War for Independence, as it was known in early New England. Come see what it was really like for those who fought to win America’s freedoms.  Great fun for the entire family!

Resurrection Resources and The Father’s Books

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Ressurection Resources Publishing

Where a Bible-Based Eduation = Success!

At Resurrection Resources we understand that the home school family often has only one income and many students. For educational materials that succeed in the home school classroom and the private school classroom, you can count on us!  Resurrection Resources is committed to providing results-oriented and affordable learning materials.  When you purchase our textbooks and workbooks they come with many added features. Other publishers charge you a separate price for daily lesson plans, quizzes, tests, answers, maps, lab kits, and manipulatives. Our English, math, science, and writing courses contain many of these items and more, such as grading charts and editing charts. We include these extras in one low price to fit most budgets. Compare for yourself!
We work hard to keep our textbooks, workbooks, and products free of worldly ideas, philosophies, and practices while we strive for each item to accurately handle the Word with maturity and balance. The miracle of the Resurrection and justification through faith in the Messiah are pivotal. All of our personnel are mature born-again believers who not only have years of accumulated Scripture study, but also decades of walking with Him in the application and teaching of His truth.

Our policy in preparing teaching and educational materials is to present and teach the truth of both the New Testament and Old Testament in an understandable, friendly format. This policy includes preparing school subjects so that your student is guided to discover Scriptural truth through interactive exercises as it is being taught. The maturity of our writers and editors, as well as their wisdom and depth of understanding the believer’s walk, is also reflected in the contents of each course of study. Whether teaching character, wisdom, behavior, or knowledge, our books consistently present our heavenly Father’s perspective, thereby building a firm foundation of Scriptural truth in your student for his/her edification and maturation.

Train for Success!!
The Father’s Books
.
The Father’s Books is the on-line division of Resurrection Resources.  Our textbooks are thorough, well-thought out, and built on a careful methodology of teaching one step at a time.
By integrating several learning styles and skills, each workbook/worktext is written to create balance in the student. For instance, our science and math not only teach math and problem-solving skills, but also enhance vocabulary, writing, reading, and language process skills. Similarly, our English and history add balance to a student by integrating logic, focusing on reality, and employing incremental learning skills, as well as other non-humanities skills. Because of this approach, our educational materials work hard to create balanced students who are better equipped to enter the job market or higher education and to succeed.

Camp MetalHead

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

07/19/2010 9:00 amto07/30/2010 4:00 pm

camp metalhead

Camp Metalhead is a tuition-free two week intensive introduction to creative metal fabrication. Participants learn about the history and profession of metalworking in Providence and beyond.

Each morning offers participants a unique behind-the-scenes experience at a local manufacturing business or artist’s studio. The rest of the time is spent in the Steel Yard studio learning how to weld! Camp Metalhead covers the basics of shop safety as well as various metal fabrication techniques including MIG welding and oxy-acetylene torch cutting. At the end of the program, participants design and fabricate a piece of functional public art to be installed in the community. Past projects include the design and fabrication of the Peace and Plenty playground gates inspired by drawings from little kids in the neighborhood, trashcans for the Onleyville Housing Corporation and a composter for William D’Abate Elementary School’s garden.

Participants learn how to make things with their hands,  explore a new form of expression and experience seeing something they made installed and used in a public place. The camp also offers a $200 stipend, pending full attendance, to compensate for their time and work on the public project.  Drawing supplies and daily lunch are also provided.

Camp Metalhead participants have gone on to assist classes and projects at the Steel Yard and attend free weekly Youth Open Studio sessions.

Applicants must be Rhode Island residents between the ages of 14 and 18. Enrollment is limited. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY!

If you have any questions about the camp or the application, please contact us. You can reach the Camp Metalhead Coordinator, Alma M. Carrillo, by phone at 401.273.7101 or by e-mail atalma@thesteelyard.org .

APPLICATIONS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN JUNE 19TH

vocal lessons word art

For all Middle and High School Aged Students Interested in Vocal Training This Summer!

Thursday and Friday afternoons

30 minute lessons   (which can be held: once per week, every other week or a set number of meeting times during June, July and August.)

What to expect: You will be asked to practice daily. As with anything, the more time you put in, the more you will get out of it. Your voice is an instrument that is physical and needs to warm up and get into shape, just like an athlete. You will learn to care for it and how to control it so it will do what you want it to do. You will learn to breathe properly, improve your vocal range, and grow in your confidence. Emily Belliveau was my first student last summer. She was diligent with her practicing at home and made improvements in breathing, tone and pitch. If you have questions, you can ask her.

Instructor: Sharon Bettis

My Background: I took piano lessons and sang solos in my church growing up. In college, I took voice lessons and hooked up with my roommate who became a singer, songwriter. I was her female backup singer for several years while I also taught elementary school, Sunday school and continued to sing in church, weddings and with friends. When I started homeschooling, it was not long before I was known as the music mom and taught every unit study topic related to music. (Mrs. Shorey, do you remember our kids playing the penny whistle during our Revolutionary War unit?) Soon, Mrs. Shorey started Good Company Tutorials and asked me to teach a music class for any kids who were willing to sing. That was eight years ago. I have since had the privilege of directing choirs these 8 years and have watched many of you mature as vocalists. I have enjoyed the idea of having a small part in the process of helping some of you out of your shells, and I am usually quite impressed with what you kids can accomplish.

Lesson Fee: $15 per half hour lesson.

THE GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT – 2010

.

GBBC1

Friday, February 12, through Monday, February 15, 2010

Bird watchers coast to coast are invited to take part in the 13th annual Great Backyard Bird Count, Friday, February 12, through Monday, February 15, 2010.  Participants in the free event will join tens of thousands of volunteers counting birds in their own backyards, local parks or wildlife refuges.

Each checklist submitted by these “citizen scientists” helps researchers at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology , the National Audubon Society, and Bird Studies Canada learn more about how the birds are doing—and how to protect them.  Last year, participants turned in more than 93,600 checklists online, creating the continent’s largest instantaneous snapshot of bird populations ever recorded.

“Taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count is a great way to get outside with family and friends, have fun, and help birds—all at the same time,” said Audubon Education Vice President, Judy Braus.  ”Even if you can identify a few species you can provide important information that enables scientists to learn more about how the environment is changing and how that affects our conservation priorities.”

Anyone can take part in the Great Backyard Bird Count, from novice bird watchers to experts.  Participants count birds for as little as 15 minutes (or as long as they wish) on one or more days of the event and report their sightings online at www.birdcount.org. One 2009 participant said, “Thank you for the opportunity to participate in citizen science.  I have had my eyes opened to a whole new interest and I love it!”

“The GBBC is a perfect first step toward the sort of intensive monitoring needed to discover how birds are responding to environmental change,” said Janis Dickinson, Director of Citizen Science at the Cornell Lab.  “Winter is such a vulnerable period for birds, so winter bird distributions are likely to be very sensitive to change.  There is only one way—citizen science—to gather data on private lands where people live and the GBBC has been doing this across the continent for many years. GBBC has enormous potential both as an early warning system and in capturing and engaging people in more intensive sampling of birds across the landscape.”

Bird populations are always shifting and changing.  For example, 2009 GBBC data highlighted a huge southern invasion of Pine Siskins across much of the eastern United States.  Participants counted 279,469 Pine Siskins on 18,528 checklists, as compared to the previous high of 38,977 birds on 4,069 checklists in 2005.  Failure of seed crops farther north caused the siskins to move south to find their favorite food.

On the www.birdcount.org website, participants can explore real-time maps and charts that show what others are reporting during the count.  The site has tips to help identify birds and special materials for educators.  Participants may also enter the GBBC photo contest by uploading images taken during the count.  Many images will be featured in the GBBC website’s photo gallery. All participants are entered in a drawing for prizes that include bird feeders, binoculars, books, CDs, and many other great birding products.

For more information about the GBBC, visit the website at www.birdcount.org. Or contact the Cornell Lab of Ornithology at 800-843-2473, gbbc@cornell.edu, or Audubon at 202-861-2242 ext. 3050, citizenscience@audubon.org.

“CALL TO PENS” SHORT STORY COMPETITION – 2009

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

12/30/2009

DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES IS DECEMBER 30, 2009!

 calltopensbanner1

Which students in your homeschool network have a love for writing and literature?  Here’s a chance for you to help those young writers make their dream a reality.  This year, Patrick Henry College is hosting its second annual A Call to Pens short story competition. Students nationwide, ages 12-18, are invited to participate by submitting original short stories that reflect a Christian worldview in a mature, thoughtful way.

We believe that literature has power to move the soul – and thus to help revive a degenerate culture.  “Writers really are the unacknowledged legislators of mankind,” says PHC Provost Dr. Gene Edward Veith, columnist for World Magazine and TableTalk.  “Writers played a major role in bringing down the Soviet Empire simply by writing stories that changed people’s sensibility… Changing the culture is a cultural task, and for that we need Christian writers.  The A Call to Pens contest is designed to help raise up those writers.”

The deadline for the contest is December 30, 2009. Cash prizes will be awarded the winners in each division.  For more information about the rules, guidelines, and other pertinent information, please visit http://www.phc.edu/acalltopens.php.  We can’t wait to read your students’ best creative works.

In Christ,
Crista Richey
“A Call to Pens” Competition Coordinator

Does your child have a creative side you are not quite sure how to nurture?  Do you realize it is vital for a child’s development to exposed them to art?

Wee Create are art classes designed to let the imagination of children run free.  Wee Create is a 6 week art class that is age appropriate for ages 18 months to 10 years.  Classes will be hands on and fun for all!  Each week the children will be making a creative craft that they will be able to enjoy for a long time to come.  There are seasonal as well as general crafts.

Because of the holidays we will be running the class weekly but taking a break for Christmas and New Years (which is why the class has three weekly sessions in December and three more in January).

Cost to register for the classes is $25 per child (sibling discount is available).  Cost will cover materials uses, we will be making some elaborate crafts, again this session but no lessons will be used again.  So if you are currently participating in Wee Create, feel free to re-enroll!

Because this class has been so popular and successful, the instructor is willing to do a second class to run on Saturdays (same 6 week – with holiday break – setup), if an interest is expressed.

Please register early as space is limited.  To register please email Christina Landahl, ladylandahl@hotmail.com.

39 Webster Street
Unit 104
Pawtucket RI, 02860

**If anyone is interested in a class geared toward more mature art students please let Chirstina Landahl know of your interest via email, ladylandahl@hotmail.com.  If there is an interest in classes that would explore mediums such as watercolors, sketching, oil painting etc, we could schedule those with the next 6 week session of Wee Create.

PRESERVING THE HARVEST – OLD STUBRIDGE VILLAGE HOMESCHOOL DAY – NOVEMBER 2009

Pumpkin 1 Animated OSV New

Wednesday, November 4, 2009, 9:30AM-4:00PM

The autumn harvest has begun!  Join us to celebrate this season ripe with late crops of corn, pumpkins, and apples.  Enjoy the brilliant fall foliage while visiting our early 19th-century rural community.

With the busy agricultural season coming to an end, New England citizens began preparing for the much-anticipated Thanksgiving celebration.  This was a time of merriment, hearty eating, and giving thanks.

In October 1621, the “first” Thanksgiving included two very culturally-diverse peoples.  The event became a much-loved tradition.  The people and cultural traditions changed over time.  Learn about some of these changes, experience some of the culture, and compare then and “now”– the 1830s.

Our re-created community at Old Sturbridge Village portrays a “typical” New England town of the early 19th century. It is divided into three distinct areas: the Center Village, the Countryside, and the Mill Neighborhood. The historic mills, shops, homes, working farm, district school, commercial buildings, and meetinghouses re-create a community where authentically costumed Villagers demonstrate and discuss with students the daily life, work, and celebrations of 19th-century New Englanders.

Also, there are opportunities for many hands-on learning experiences.  Either pre-register online for a 50-minute Hands-on Studio in the Museum Education building (we recommend a maximum of two per child) or visit the Village Craft Center to make a quick craft.

Begin celebrating your holiday season early by making and enjoying a Thanksgiving Meal.  This 3-hour program will take place at Museum Education.  Traditional early American fare will be served.

Please join us for this festive event!  Walk the trails, attend performances and demonstrations, and visit with our costumed interpreters among the 40 original New England buildings.  We recommend that you allow for up to 3-hours to visit the Village.
