behind the making of the carousel and the maker,

literature class

Children’s Literature (1 hour per week)


Suitable for ages 6-12, this class will cover great works written specifically for young readers. Fee: $50/semester ($40/each additional child). The course will include such children’s literature as The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, A Wrinkle in Time, Andersen’s Fairy Tales, and (if the students’ reading level is high) The Hobbit.

Junior High / High School Literature (1 1/2 hours per week)


Suitable for ages 12-17, this class will cover great works (poems, short stories, and novels) written in English. Fee: $70/semester ($50/each additional child). A complete syllabus for this class is available upon request. Major works will include Beowulf, The Tempest, Pride and Prejudice, David Copperfield, and The Lord of the Rings.

Both literature classes will follow a lecture/discussion format and will meet for the entire academic year (10 classes in the fall and 10 classes in the spring). Students should plan to do the required reading in advance of each class. (Jessica has helpful suggestions for parents of slow or reluctant readers!) Miss Esolen will assign an optional term paper or other suitable written assignment for each class and will upon request issue a grade report at the end of each semester.


Classes are tentatively scheduled to meet on Wednesday’s as follows:

9:00-10:00 Children’s Literature

11:45-1:15 Jr. High/High School Literature

Fall Classes: September 15, 22, 29; October 6, 13, 20, 27; November 3, 10, 17; an extra meeting will be held from 10:00-11:30 on Dec. 2 and again at the end of the spring classes for those who wish to take the final examination (no additional charge).

Skating at the Smithfield Municipal Ice Rink

Wednesdays from 12-2 PM, starting on Sept. 15th and continuing through May 2010.

Children, Teens and Adults are all welcome to skate.

Cost is only $2 to skate and rentals are available for only $5.

Please follow all rules posted inside the rink. The manager is very gracious to offer us this time at such a reduced price.  We are allowed to bring in our own food and drinks, since the concession stand is closed while we are there. NEW! This year, Save The Bay offers  Year One of the following three-year program plan. YEAR ONE:Physical Oceanography Students will focus on the principles of physical oceanography including water chemistry, hydrodynamics, ocean circulation and marine geology.

Coming in 2011-2010… YEAR TWO: Marine Biology – Students will focus on the macro and micro biology of marine organisms including taxonomy, structure, and behavior. YEAR THREE: Life Sciences/Ecology – In this year students will focus on the ecology of the marine environment as defined as the interaction of physical and biological characteristics. This component will also investigate human influences on the marine environment including pollution from plastics, nutrients, and bacteria, climate change, and use of marine resources.

Oceanography series runs monthly, Sept. 2010 to May 2011.   3rd Wednesday of the month (unless noted), 1:00 – 3:30 pm @ The Save The Bay Center, Providence (8 classes in series)

It’s an annual tradition in my family to do the Morris Farm Hayride and Corn Maze, and it never disappoints! It’s always a fun time had by all!

We are again hosting the NACCAP Christian College Fair here at Whitinsville Christian High School in Whitinsville, MA.

This year the fair is on Sept. 29th from 7-9pm in our school gym.  A financial aid seminar will also be offered at approximately 7:45pm.

The fair is a great chance to pick up information, have discussions with college reps and get some questions answered.  There is no
pressure sales pitches and the financial aid session can be very helpful to parents and students.  Oh, and there is no fee of any kind.

Narragansett Bay is home to many diverse and unique animals. In this series little homeschoolers will be introduced to a variety of our coolest neighbors!

We will take a look at the animals without backbones in Narragansett Bay – the invertebrates — and explore all the various habitats in and around Aquidneck Island! The kids will maintain field journals about their field exploration and classroom time.  Series runs monthly, Sept. 2010 to May 2011.   1st Wednesday of the month (unless noted), 1:00 – 3:00 pm @ the Exploration Center, Newport (8 classes in series)

Beginning German

(1 hour per week)


Suitable for all ages, this class will cover the rudiments of the German language, including basic conversation skills and simple grammatical constructions. Fee: $50/semester or $40 for students also enrolled in a literature class. Each week, Miss Esolen will present a lesson in grammar and will engage the students in simple conversation. The class will be fun, with the students learning to sing some songs and hymns and simple poems, as well. There will be a weekly homework assignment to reinforce the lesson, as well as weekly vocabulary list to study. At the end of each semester, Miss Esolen will offer a final examination for those who would like to be graded on their work.

This year TeenPact plans on holding week-long, hands-on government classes in 38 states. We are excited about the opportunity to help students become active citizens and grow stronger in their walk with God.
